Two young girls of Sri Lanka are reportedly creating a buzz amongst the SL TV/MOVIE geeks. They are the proof that we have come a long way since Denawaka Hamine’s role as a villager in the global nerd fest Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
It has been a lonely road towards Hollywood from Sri Lanka, and we keep wondering why. There are oodles of female talent, emerging and of course, it’s not all about the looks. (Look at Lena Dunham, Mindy Kaling’s successful TV shows – we got this girls COME ON).
Sri Lankan female millennials have definitely got the sass, talent, and gorgeous island tanned skin to make things big in the world of entertainment and we have proof with these two baes,
1. Shalini Peiris, Actress
We got to know about her acting chops in a single sentence headline about her role in the upcoming Justice League movie starring Ben Affleck as Batman and Jason Mamoa as Aquaman (SWOOOON!).Since her graduation from the Arts Educational Schools in London, she has worked steadily in professional theater, with a number of well-known establishments such as the Hampstead Theatre, Theatre Royal Stratford East, and Tamasha.
She was also cast in a minor role in 2016’s The Huntsman: Winter’s War” starring Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain. Now, imagine seeing tht Chris Hemsworth face upclose!! (drools)
2. Amara Karan, Actress
We came across her in HBO’s brand new addiction “The night of” and were genuinely shocked to find her Sri Lankan origin. (Her name was not a giveaway either). Amara was born to Sri Lankan parents in England and is a graduate in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from the university of oxford (?, SHE IS SMART TOO).
She has 18 credits to her name , including roles in TV shows Dr. Who, Stan Lee’s Lucky Man, and Kidnap and Ransom to name a few.
