Today is the final date of a successful venture towards a worthy cause. Its significance marks as one of the best volunteer driven campaign that was orchestrated towards fund raising in the Sri Lankan history.
What is “Trail Sri Lanka”?
A walk across the length of Sri Lanka which is 670 km. It was done by volunteers during a course of 28 days. The main objective of this charity walk was to raise funds for Cancer Treatment in the country while spreading awareness & building unity among each other. #Walk #Unite #Heal
How did it begin?
The first Trail walk took place in 2011. It was a joint venture between two friends and colleagues. Sarinda Unamboowe, as per a pledge he made to walk the length of his homeland in the name of peace, if the civil war was to end. Nathan Sivagananathan, who had experienced a personal loss saw this as a way to help many who struggle due to cancer. So began Trail Sri Lanka, involving thousands of volunteers.
How is Trail 2016 different from previous?
The goal for Trail 2016 (“The Walk Back”) is raising funds (USD 5 Million) to build a cancer treatment unit in Galle and the walk is from Northern Point Pedro to Southern Dondra Head.
The Trail 2011 walk was from Southern Dondra Head to Northern Point Pedro with the aim to raise funds (USD 1 Million) in order to build a cancer treatment unit in Jaffna.
Was their any preparation for Trail walkers?
Yes, the Trail walkers had practice sessions, especially involving the walkers who committed to walk for more than 1 day. Imagine walking an average of 23.9 km for 28 days, without a day’s break. 😲
In addition warm up & yoga sessions were organized before the start of a day’s walk.
What is so special about Trail?
Trail brought many Sri Lankans together, focused on one Goal, which is to help Cancer Patients in Sri Lanka.
Trail has no barriers. Age, Religion, Race, Attire…. None #trailasone
Companies & societies provided refreshments to the walkers and many of them sponsored this event financially, while some joined Trail as walkers even on working days.
A whole lot of Sri Lankan celebrities joined this event. Cricketers, Athletes, Actors, Models, Singers, Comedians & Politicians all as one joined the cause. Some as ambassadors & some as participants. Ambassadors are going out of the way by committing to walk the complete distance from day 01 to 28.
Even the poor donated the way they can. Sri Lankans have again proven that they are a very generous nation.
In retrospect, #trailsl was a success, making one wonder, yet again on the tender hearts that Sri Lankans behold.
