Are you a Mommy on the go and on the lookout for child friendly places in Colombo ? (other than the supermarket that is). We have compiled a list of places around town that we believe is the best for you and your family.
This is one of best places in Colombo to hang out with your kids. You could leave them at the creche and gorge on the feast offered by Cinnamon Grand’s cosy pub. The creche provides oodles of entertainment for your kids, so you can enjoy spending time with your friends without having to worry about running behind your kids.
Although it is a little off Colombo, this is a place we couldn’t leave out. Watch your kids turn into a zombie on steroids ( think resident evil type Zombies-GASP) as they scream their way through the jungle gym, ball pit and trampoline. Don’t forget to take pairs of socks for you and the kids, but if you do forget them, the venue has it on sale too.
Hundreds of parents throng outside the entrance waiting to get in with their kids on a daily basis. Ok! so maybe we exaggerated the numbers a little - the zoo isn't in the best of state since of late. But it is still a place you can take your kids to have a look at animal species.
Kids love the sand and water. All you need to do is to pack some beach toys and swimwear for the kids. Don't forget suntan lotion to keep skin cancer at bay.(This is totally mommy speak btw) The beach is best visited during the late afternoons between 3.30 pm and 6 pm. Once the tide starts coming in, it's a bit difficult to walk on the beach with cranky kids.
If you want an early night at home, we recommend you take the kids here on an early afternoon and watch them run around for hours so that they would knock off with sound sleep back home.(this is a tried, tested and recommended by us mommies at Refresh) From cycle riding, ball games, to just randomly chasing around other kid's toys and then throwing a tantrum, this place is definitely one of our hotspots.
Milk has a great selection of books and toys (omg did you see the star wars pop up books they had a while back?) for kids. They even have a little cafe with child-friendly meals that will fill up their little tummies after torturing you for hours asking for toys and books they will never play with once they go home.
From flying kites to Street food , your kids are going to enjoy an evening at the Galle face. There are Street vendors selling beautiful kites and then there are those isso wades. YUMM. But avoid letting your kids snack on them – you never know what allergies or stomach indigestions that may pop up later on. Don't forget to Stuff your face while your children jog around the scenic delight.
It’s probably the oldest playhouse that’s been around Colombo for over 15 years. From dodgem cars, bouncy castles, and cartoon themed rides – your kids will be spoilt for choice. We recommend you check on availability before you drop in because it’s often closed for exclusive birthday parties.
Children love travelling and what better way to tour the city than on a double decker bus? They would love the adventure of sightseeing the busy city while on top of a bus. Don’t forget to pack some snacks!
The German toy museum is a personal collection of beautiful toys, over the past 35 years. The collection is astonishing – even for adults. Prepare to be wowed by the detailed décor sets such as living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms with miniature figures. If you don’t find old dolls creepy, then this is a definite place to visit with your kids.
One of the few places in Colombo that offers a play area for toddlers, with padded walls and toddler toys. (We are not mentioning the other fast food restaurants because those play areas are more suited for older children) . The menu is pretty decent and they have a good kiddies menu too. It also has easy stroller access – so you can wheel your baby around.
If all fails – just head down to Sathutu Uyana. It’s not as bad you think because it was recently renovated ( about a year ago ) and there are many safe rides for kids THAT ACTUALLY WORK. If they do get bored or if the rides are occupied- you can stroll down the park with your kids. Just buy them some candy floss, and you are good to go.
We all know this had to be included on the list. Even though you don't like to admit it, it's one of the best places you can visit with your kids and forget about them because they are too busy getting pampered by the grandparents. Don't forget to load the new game of thrones on your phone or even carry the copy of me before you- you can definitely treasure some mummy time with this visit.
