So the 9th European film festival was held in Colombo from 06th October to 11th October 2016, creating a space to celebrate diversity through cinema. Promoting the wonderful experience of cross-culture and bringing people together to share that experience; the 9th European film festival was educating, amazing and above all an entertaining experience.
Based on my experience I’ve come to list down my favorite five movies. And those who missed it grab some popcorn and coke, relax and check out these movies.
Synopsis: A girl with few real prospects join gang, reinventing herself and gaining a sense of self confidence in the process.however,she soon finds that this new life doesn’t necessarily make her any happier.
Girlhood is a movie about a life of a girl who likes to remain being a girl and refuses to be a woman. Her love for the girlhood results as confusing ending where she cannot bring back time neither do anything to make it right again.
Leaving the audience with rhetoric’s this movie brings out at least one experience every girl had in their girlhood.
04. STRANGE HEAVEN
Synopsis: This movie tells the story of Basia and Marek-a young immigrant couple living in Sweden. One innocent lie triggers a family drama; and their daughter is taken away by social services. The couple can’t agree on how to fight the ruthless procedures of modern state. Feeling powerless and desperate, they decide to act beyond the law.
Based on the timeless theme of love the story is portrayed around a young couple and their child. The conflict between love and financial need spins the family into an unexpected situation. This story depicts the strong bond of family despite all the obstacles and challenges in life.
03. RYTMUS : DREAM FROM THE BLOCK
Synopsis: This documentary reveals the complexity of relationships within family, where each of their members has a different surname, where one has to use adjectives like “step”, “blood” or “biological”, but foremost a family that has been struggling to fight racism. The popular Slovak musician Rytmus, who grew up in non-Romani family, became a celebrity and an idol of youth. He sold tens of thousands albums, was a judge on Czech and Slovak Idol and his videos on internet were seen by over 100 million users. Intimate confessions of his closest family and friends portray the intriguing puzzle of his personality.
This movie is all about keeping the memories of past and moving on to the future. As a child of gypsy father, Patrik was a victim of racism and here we see how he journeys through life from hiding his identity to discovering and accepting his roots.
This documentary depicts a reality which most people tend to forget: It’s not about money or fame; it’s about living. And no matter what you become nobody’s life could be perfect. It’s a mix of sadness, anger, hatred and happiness. And that’s what you call living.”
Synopsis: The story of the foot soldiers of early feminist movement as they fought for the right to vote, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal state.
“We’re in every home, we’re half the human race. You can’t stop us all.”
A movie about women who stood up for the future of women.
The sacrifice, brutality they experienced and a depiction of their courage. Moud Watts, a working class woman join forces with suffragette, leaving behind her family, life and respect for a fight of equality where women are not less or more than men. Where deeds became powerful than words.
01. BOY 7
Sam regains consciousness in the middle of a crowded subway, he doesn’t know how he got there, where he came from or his name nor identity until he finds his notebook and gradually realizes that he is in danger. Meanwhile he meets a girl named Lara in the subway and later on realizes his connection with her.
This story is depicted in the form of flashbacks and is set on a future version of Netherlands, which have turned into a police state. Depriving its citizen’s freedom and misuse of the talent of young generation leads on to series of illegal attacks and malformation of young minds. This story depicts a future where mechanism has surpassed humanity.
A thrilling turn of events will make you leave gasping with terror and surprise at the same time.
